Canary Media covers a landmark step for cement decarbonization: Electrified Thermal Solutions will deploy two Joule Hive™ Thermal Batteries at a facility run by global cement giant Holcim — the first time a thermal-energy storage system will provide heat to a high-temperature chamber inside a cement plant. The units are set to come online early next year.
CEO and co-founder Daniel Stack calls the project “a step change in what’s been done to actually electrify cement and concrete production.” The announcement comes on the heels of the first commercial-scale Joule Hive at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio logging more than 1,000 hours of operation — the proof points needed to move ahead with the Holcim project. With cement responsible for roughly 8% of global CO₂ emissions, electrifying kiln heat with firebricks charged on clean power is one of the most direct paths to cleaner concrete.
