MIT News: “Decarbonizing heavy industry with thermal batteries”

MIT spinout Electrified Thermal Solutions has developed an electrically conductive firebrick that stores heat at high enough temperatures to power industrial processes.

CEO and co-founder Daniel Stack spoke with MIT News’s Zach Winn about our breakthrough solution for net-zero industry.

A few highlights from our journey:

  • Developed at MIT’s Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering
  • Successfully demonstrated our technology can store heat efficiently for hours
  • Secured $40M in DOE funding to scale our solution
  • Building our first megawatt-scale commercial system, launching in next 7 months

Our vision? To enable industries worldwide to tap into low-cost, clean electricity for their heating needs. With electricity prices becoming increasingly favorable for flexible consumption—negative pricing over 20% of the year in some regions—our Joule Hive Thermal Battery is positioned to compete head-to-head with fossil fuels on price.
